Safaris fill your mornings and evenings, but the middle of the day is free. Sawai Madhopur and the country around it have plenty to fill it.
Ranthambore Fort and Trinetra Ganesh
The thousand-year-old hill fort inside the park, with the much-loved three-eyed Ganesh temple. No safari permit is needed. Read our fort guide or book the fort cab.
Chambal river safari
About an hour away, a boat ride on the Chambal shows you gharials, crocodiles, river dolphins and skimmers. See Chambal river safari.
Surwal lake
A seasonal lake outside town that draws water birds in winter, with village life around it. Best in the cooler months after a good monsoon.
Crafts and art
Look for local craft cooperatives along Ranthambore Road selling hand block prints, embroidery and textiles made by women from the villages around the park, and for galleries of wildlife paintings by local artists.
Temples in town
The old town has several temples, including the Chamatkar Jain temple, known for its marble work.
Khandar Fort
A less-visited hill fort on the eastern side of the reserve, for those who enjoy history off the usual route.
Rest
After a 5 a.m. start, a long lunch and a nap before the evening safari is a fine plan too. See where to stay.
