Best time to visit Ranthambore, season by season

Ranthambore is open for safaris from October to June. The core zones close for the monsoon from 1 July to 30 September, while some buffer zones may stay open. Each part of the season looks and feels different, so the best time depends on what you want from your trip.

October and November: green and fresh

The park reopens after the rains. The forest is green, the lakes are full and the air is clear. Grass is still tall in places, which can hide animals, but the light is beautiful and the weather is comfortable morning and evening.

December to February: cold mornings and mist

Winter brings cold, misty mornings over the lakes and some of the best light of the year. Migratory birds arrive on the water. Mornings in an open Gypsy or Canter are genuinely cold, so bring a warm layer, a cap and gloves. This is also the busiest time, so weekend and holiday permits sell out early.

March: the forest turns gold

Leaves start to fall and the forest opens up. Visibility improves every week, and the days are warm but pleasant.

April to June: heat and the best sightings

This is the hottest part of the year, often above 40°C by afternoon. Water dries up across the park, and tigers spend long hours near the lakes and waterholes that remain. Many regular visitors consider this the best time for sightings. Carry water, a hat and sunscreen, and choose morning shifts if you feel the heat.

July to September: monsoon

Core zones are closed. The rains turn the park lush and green, and some buffer zones may run safaris. Check with us before you plan a monsoon visit.
