The fort

A thousand years on the hill

Ranthambore Fort has watched over the forest for close to a thousand years. Its walls, gateways, palaces and step wells run along the top of the hill, with views straight down to Padam Talao. In 2013 it was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, one of the Hill Forts of Rajasthan.

Inside the walls is the Trinetra Ganesh temple, one of the best-known Ganesh temples in Rajasthan. Devotees send invitations to Ganesh by post for weddings and new beginnings.

Good to know

  • The climb from the gate to the temple takes 20 to 30 minutes at an easy pace
  • Wear comfortable shoes; the path is stone and uneven in places
  • Langurs live along the walls; keep food out of sight
  • Festival days at the temple are very busy; ask us before you plan
