Ranthambore runs two safari shifts every day, each about two and a half hours. Guests often ask which one is better for tigers. The honest answer: both can be excellent, and each has its own character.
The morning shift
- Tigers often move along tracks and lake edges after the night
- Cool air and soft light, with mist over the lakes in winter
- Birds are most active
- In December and January it is genuinely cold in an open vehicle
The evening shift
- Warm golden light in the last hour, loved by photographers
- In summer, tigers come to water through the afternoon
- Comfortable in winter, hot in May and June
- Animals become active again as the heat drops
Season by season
- October–November: both shifts pleasant; mornings slightly better for activity
- December–February: mornings cold and misty, evenings comfortable
- March: both good as the forest opens up
- April–June: mornings cooler; evenings strong for waterhole sightings but hot

Our advice
If you can, book one of each. Different shifts often mean different zones, and two drives give you two chances. If you can only do one, choose the morning in summer and the evening in deep winter if you are travelling with children or feel the cold.
