Ranthambore in the monsoon: is the park open?

Every year the rains change Ranthambore completely. The dry, golden forest turns green within weeks, the lakes fill up and the tracks turn to mud. Here is what that means for visitors.

What closes

The core zones 1 to 5 close from 1 July to 30 September. This protects the forest and the animals during the breeding season and keeps vehicles off washed-out tracks.

What may stay open

In recent years some buffer areas have run safaris during the monsoon. Whether they open, and which ones, depends on forest department orders and on the rain, so it is decided season by season. Ask us before you plan.

Is a monsoon visit worth it?

  • Pros: green landscapes, fewer visitors, cooler days after rain, beautiful light
  • Cons: dense cover makes animals harder to see, rain can cancel drives, limited zones
  • Best for: repeat visitors, landscape photographers and people who simply love forests

Other things to do

The fort and Trinetra Ganesh temple are open in the monsoon and the views over a green forest are spectacular. The town’s lakes fill up and attract birds. See Things to do in Sawai Madhopur.

When the park reopens

The core zones reopen on 1 October. October and November are green and fresh, a lovely time to visit. See Best time to visit Ranthambore.
